Embrace Balance in the New Year: A Guide to Establishing Dinacharya

As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect time to embrace positive changes and foster a sense of balance in our lives. While a lot of us will begin the year with a new resolution, I encourage us to establish some new routines that embrace a balanced lifestyle. In the realm of Ayurveda, the ancient wisdom of daily routines, known as Dinacharya, offers a blueprint for holistic well-being. Let’s explore how you can establish Dinacharya to create a harmonious start to your day and year.

Dinacharya, derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Dina’ (day) and ‘Charya’ (routine), refers to the set of daily practices aligned with nature’s rhythms. This time-honored tradition aims to bring balance to the mind, body, and spirit by synchronizing daily activities with the natural cycles.

Dinacharya has some key elements, and if you haven’t established a morning routine before I encourage you to start small and then build. Use the list below as the complete list, and add a component every 2-3 week to build out your full routine over a few months.  

  • Rise Early: Wake up before sunrise (‘Brahma Muhurta’) to align with nature’s energy and experience a peaceful start to the day.
  • Tongue Scraping (Jihwa Prakshalana): Cleanse the tongue with a tongue scraper to remove toxins accumulated overnight and improve oral health.
  • Oral Care: Follow tongue scraping with brushing, oil pulling (Gandusha), or rinsing the mouth with herbal decoctions for oral hygiene.
  • Nasal Cleansing (Nasya): Administer herbal oils or herbal decoctions in the nostrils to cleanse the nasal passages and promote respiratory health.
  • Hydration: Drink warm water to stimulate digestion and detoxification. This helps in flushing out toxins from the body.
  • Elimination: Attend to natural calls promptly to maintain healthy bowel movements and aid in detoxification.
  • Self-Massage (Abhyanga): Massage the body with warm herbal oils to nourish the skin, improve circulation, and promote relaxation.
  • Yoga and Exercise: Engage in gentle yoga asanas, stretching, or exercise suitable for your body type to boost energy and vitality.
  • Meditation and Mindfulness: Practice meditation, deep breathing, or mindfulness to calm the mind and enhance mental clarity.

Establishing a routine requires consistency. Aim to practice Dinacharya daily to experience its full benefits. Don’t forget to tailor Dinacharya practices to suit your lifestyle, preferences, and individual constitution (dosha).

Establishing Dinacharya can be a transformative journey towards holistic well-being. It’s a way to reconnect with nature’s rhythms, nurture self-discipline, and cultivate a sense of balance in life.
