Ayurvedic Remedies for Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that affects pregnant women, and it can lead to complications for both the mother and the baby if left uncontrolled. The exact causes of gestational diabetes are not fully understood, but there are several known risk factors that can increase a woman’s likelihood of developing the condition including hormonal changes, family history (Women with a family history of diabetes are at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes), Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ethnicity – certain ethnicities, including African American, Hispanic/Latina, and Native American, are at a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes and others.

It’s important to remember that having these risk factors does not necessarily mean that a woman will develop gestational diabetes, and conversely, women without these risk factors can still develop the condition. Early detection and management can help prevent complications for both the mother and the baby. Ayurveda offers some natural remedies that may help manage gestational diabetes alongside medical treatment. Here are a few:

  • Fenugreek seeds: Soak a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight and drink the water in the morning on an empty stomach. Fenugreek seeds are known to improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon can help lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity. You can sprinkle cinnamon on your food or drink cinnamon tea.
  • Bitter gourd: Bitter gourd is known to have blood sugar-lowering properties. You can drink bitter gourd juice or add it to your meals.
  • Amla or Indian gooseberry: Amla is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help regulate blood sugar levels and boost immunity. You can eat it raw, drink amla juice or take it in supplement form.
  • Exercise: Regular exercise can help improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels. Consult with your doctor or a qualified yoga instructor to see what exercises are safe and suitable for you during pregnancy.

Additionally, gestational diabetes requires close monitoring and management, so it’s important to follow your doctor’s advice and attend regular prenatal check-ups.
