Nurturing Calm: Ayurveda-Inspired Ways to Practice Mindfulness with Children for Stress Management
Share
In today’s fast-paced world, stress is no stranger, even to our little ones. Teaching children mindfulness techniques rooted in the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda can be a valuable gift, providing them with tools to navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience. Mindfulness practices not only aid in stress management but also promote emotional well-being, focus, and a deeper connection to oneself and the world around us.
Cultivating Mindfulness in Children is an imperative life skill and it is never too early to stop. It allows children to build a mind body connection that can be so helpful as they gain emotional intelligence and awareness. Here are some ways you can instill this with your kiddos.
- Breathing Exercises (Pranayama) – Teach children simple breathing exercises like “Balloon Breath” or “Bee Breath.” Encourage them to take deep, mindful breaths to calm their minds and bodies. Explain how focusing on the breath can bring peace and clarity. If you have little ones, try belly breathing with a lovie to make it more interesting!
- Mindful Eating – Engage children in mindful eating by encouraging them to savor each bite, noticing textures and flavors. Explain how eating mindfully aids digestion and promotes gratitude for nourishing food. Try to stay away from “happy plates” (a mistake I made) and encourage them to eat distraction free so they can truly be in sync with their hunger cues.
- Nature Connection – Ayurveda values the connection between nature and well-being. Take walks, explore gardens, or simply sit outside, fostering an appreciation for the natural world, which can be calming and grounding. Weekend hikes are a great way to get started and start small!
- Yoga and Movement – Introduce simple yoga poses or movements suitable for children. Practice together and emphasize the connection between movement and inner calmness. Teach poses like “Tree Pose” or “Butterfly Pose” to promote balance and relaxation.
- Rituals and Routines – Establish soothing bedtime rituals, including gentle massages with oils like sesame or coconut. Explain how these rituals calm the nervous system and prepare the body for restful sleep. If your child is older, start to form morning routines as well!
- Storytelling and Journaling – Engage children in storytelling or journaling exercises. Encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings, fostering self-awareness and emotional resilience. We were very fortunate that our elementary school instilled this practice and it has been a life changer for us. Journaling can also include art which often helpful when emotions are running high and vocabulary is sparse.
- Gratitude Practices – Promote gratitude by creating a gratitude jar or journal. Encourage children to reflect on and appreciate the positive aspects of their lives, fostering a positive mindset
