Quick New Mom Guide

Congratulations on becoming a new mom! The journey of motherhood can be both rewarding and challenging, and taking care of yourself is crucial in order to be able to care for your little one. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a holistic approach to health and well-being that can be particularly beneficial for new mothers.

One of the key principles of Ayurveda is fourth trimester, referred to as the first 40 days during which all things are focused on the importance of maintaining balance in the body and mind. This can be achieved through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques. As a new mom, it is especially important to pay attention to your diet and ensure that you are getting all of the nutrients that you need to support your own health and the health of your baby. Some Ayurvedic recommendations for a healthy diet for new mothers include:

  • Eat nourishing, easy-to-digest foods such as soups, stews, and cooked grains. Khichadi’ s are key, they personally worked for me and I was eating them once a day for the first few weeks. Avoid foods that are heavy, fried, or processed.
  • Drink plenty of water and herbal teas to stay hydrated. If you are breastfeeding, stay away from caffeinated teas and focus on supporting teas like fenugreek, fennel and star anise.
  • Consider taking supplements such as fenugreek, fennel, and shatavari, which are believed to support lactation and promote overall health.

In addition to a healthy diet, regular exercise is also important for new moms. Gentle exercises such as walking and yoga can help to improve strength and stamina, and also aid in stress management. It is important to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard, especially in the early postpartum period.

Lastly, don’t forget about managing your stress. You just gave birth which is a huge event and now adjusting to a new norm, these are life altering changes that require new routines to be developed. Stress management is an important aspect of self-care for new mothers. Ayurveda recommends techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and journaling as effective ways to manage stress and promote overall well-being. Taking time for yourself, even just a few minutes a day, can make a big difference in your ability to handle the demands of motherhood. One simple thing that worked for me was to put to listen for 10 minutes of meditation music, it was short enough I could do when the baby napped and it allowed me to recenter myself.

Don’t’ forget to care of yourself in order to be able to care for your little one. By following some simple Ayurvedic principles such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques, you can support your own health and well-being as a new mom.
